Alternative healing choices

Alternative healing choices

Energy medicine is becoming a broad term in the alternative healing world and I like it because it fits - when you come down to it, its only energy that matters regardless of the manifestation it takes. I've already discussed many forms in energy exercises and lifestyle but there are many other healing options, which I describe below. Also see, Healing programs and education.

Acupuncture
I have done acupuncture for over 10 years for many different reasons but the results are always positive. Acupuncture involves the delicate placement of needles into the skin on specific meridian points. It has helped me immensely with stress, back problems and general well-being. Be sure you're with someone good. My acupuncturist, Caroline Radice, told me that if you can find someone trained in California you're probably in good hands because California has the toughest requirements to become licensed. I actually have two acupuncturists now and they are amazing, also see Jill Blakeway. It's well worth overcoming any anxiety you may have about this kind of treatment because the benefits are incredible.

Acupressure
Acupressure uses the fingers in place of needles. It is powerful energy work. Acupressure enables the energy in your body to release blockages and to flow easily. Acupressure points have a high electrical conductivity at the surface of the skin and thus conduct the body's energy most effectively. Acupressure is an ancient healing art developed in Asia over 5,000 years ago. Using the power and sensitivity of the hand, acupressure is effective in the relief of stress-related ailments, self-treatment and preventive health care. Acupressure releases tension, increases circulation, reduces pain and develops vibrant health.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
EFT is a technique gaining much recognition. "Tapping for health" has recently been featured in many publications. It provides you with relief from pain, diseases and emotional issues. It is a version of acupuncture except you don't use needles. Instead, you stimulate well established energy meridian points on your body by tapping on them with your fingertips. Take a look at the book The Promise of Energy Psychology. Also check out see www.energypsyched.com

Bodytalk
I first did this at Pura Vida in Costa Rica and it blew my mind. It uses muscles testing to "talk" to your body and I found its effects immediately tangible and beneficial. I know some other people who had the same mind-blowing experience with it. I have also heard others say they feel the practitioner can influence the information, but that could be true for anything and it's always about having a great practitioner. So if you try it and don't like it, give it another chance with another practitioner. During the session you talk to the practitioner first about anything specific you are looking to find or heal. Then you lie down and the practitioner stands by your side and talks to your body. Sometimes you understand what they are doing and at other times they are going so quickly you're not sure what's being said. For example, I hadn't brought this up as an issue, but the practitioner asked my body if it needed to let go of any toxins and it turned out some old vaccines were stuck in some muscles and needed to be released.

Biofeedback
Electronic biofeedback devices are designed to record physiological functions non-invasively. Most record from the surface of the skin. The information recorded by surface sensors is usually sent to a computer for processing and then displayed on the monitor and/or through speakers. The person being recorded and any therapist or coach who may be present can attend to the display of information and incorporate it into whatever process they are attempting to perform. This is the technology used in the stress reduction video game Journey into the Wild Divine and also with some machines that measure your auric field.

Brain Gym
Brain Gym is a program of physical movements that enhance learning and performance in all areas. Brain Gym uses specific movements targeted to integrate the body and mind to bring about rapid and often dramatic improvements in: Concentration, memory, reading, writing, organizing, listening and physical coordination. It stimulates the brain's neural pathways the way nature does - through movement.

Chi Machine
The Chi Machine's movements increase the oxygen in your body. This is a machine where you lie down and your feet lay in grooves and the machine moves vigorously from side to side. It creates an environment that increases oxygen in the body and has a cardio effect physically. It also stimulates your auric field and you can feel the energetic tingling at the end of any session. It reportedly helps with back problems, weight loss, fatigue, stimulating organs and reduces arthritic pain. I actually own one and love to use it.

Cranial sacral therapy
Cranial sacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that works directly with the subtle movements in the skull and sacrum. It is used to find and release areas of restriction and it acts to re-educate old holding patterns. It calms over-stressed systems and over-stimulated nerves. It increases the health of the central nervous system through balance.

Crystal therapy
Crystals have been used as a healing tool throughout time. They absorb and generate energy and this energy can be programmed. Most healers I know incorporate crystals into other forms of healing therapies. Crystals can help amplify the healing energy in any therapeutic session. They are especially good for balancing the chakras, meditation and environment cleansings. Crystals are often used in flower essences and scared oils. I program and use them in my oils, like my all over and stretch mark. For more resources see energy tools. Also see Crystals for more detailed information.

Dowsing/pendulums
The most common form is with the use of a pendulum. Usually a pointed crystal hangs on a chain and it will spin or sway forward and backward. This can be a forced movement - if you needed a clockwise/counterclockwise movement. It could also move through the use of subtle energy - you find its "yes" and "no" through a simple process and then ask it questions and/or use it for energy corrections. See Using pendulums.

DNA activation
There is a theory in certain circles that we are evolving and a part of that evolution is the activation of dormant DNA. Most people know that DNA is the "blueprint of life" and is located in every cell of the body. In addition to each chromosome's 2-strand double helix of DNA, there are an additional 10 etheric strands of DNA available to each human that have been deactivated and dormant since the beginning of evolutionary time. Each additional strand possesses attributes that permit the individual to perform greater human accomplishments. Scientists acknowledge that we currently only use 3% of our current 2-strand DNA. This therapy is meant to reverse that. I had it done with a couple of friends and we all felt something a bit out-of-body afterward. I can't honestly say I have seen any long term effects, but then who really knows??? I think it's worth a try.

Energy medicine by Donna Eden
"Energy medicine gives people freedom" Donna Eden said in my recent conversation with her. (See How energy medicine can change your life) The knowledge of energy medicine will set you free and I'm a believer. This is the brand of energy medicine I have been studying and I am currently in year two of the certification program. Donna is one of those very rare human beings who generate light and love in the most palpable way. If you ever get the chance to hear her in person I strongly encourage you to... Donna is her own experience. She works with her husband David Feinstein, who is one of the pioneers of energy psychology. Their brand of energy medicine has been called the medicine of the future by many. It is practical and can be easily incorporated into any other form of alternative or traditional therapy.

The basic principles that energy needs space to be flowing and crossing over and in harmony with all levels of our energy system. When energy has this space we are free from blockages and imbalances and become our optimum selves. The body is intelligent and will respond to any opportunity to attain radiant health and be harmoniously connected to our other energy systems.

Energy medicine uses non-invasive healing techniques. Using the electromagnetic energy in our hands we can tap or hold acupressure points, trace energy pathways and use specific movements to correct for any energy interruptions, imbalances or blockages and unscramble energy. Imbalances can be caused by various physical and emotional states but the common ones are stress, toxins, anything our triple warmer perceives as a threat and physical constriction of some sort. Long-term conditions/patterns can cause bad energy habits to form and through energy medicine we can re-pattern that energy. Of course, lifestyle changes as well, otherwise you'll just slip back into your old negative habits and consequences. So a big part of energy medicine is; How long can you hold the corrected energy? Sometimes you have to physically remove yourself from a place or situation to do this. We are all so affected by the people and environments we surround ourselves with - as they are by us.

Energy medicine is impactful on its own or as a complement to traditional therapies. It has many entry levels, so even if you are short on time you can try something like the five minute routine.

We all have inherent healing energies and abilities and energy medicine relies on practitioners using their internal intelligence when tapping into a client's energy. Be an investigator and remember that life rarely follows a rulebook. In general, you want your energy free-flowing, clear, expanded and properly filtered and, since our energy is constantly changing, the use of energy medicine daily will greatly improve and maintain your health. Check out the Energy Medicine book and the energy medicine starter kit or try the triple warmer soother energy exercise.

Energy Psychology
Working with traditional psychotherapies, energy psychology employs the body's subtle energies to overcome many emotional issues and negative habit patterns. Through the use of tapping, visualization and other non invasive forms of healing, energy psychology provides fast results. It's an umbrella term for many modalities, such as the Emotional Freedom Techniques and Thought Field Therapy. Take a look at the book The Promise of Energy Psychology.

Flotation tanks
These are hard to find but if can get access to one, go for it. They are so relaxing. You climb into a big silver box in which there is about 8 to 12 inches of salt water or enough so that you actually float. You get a nice head pillow and earplugs if you want them. It feels like a cocoon. In London it became trendy for a while and to accommodate claustrophobic people they had flotation rooms, but I prefer the tanks. Supposedly, 60 minutes in a tank is the same as six hours of sleep. Regardless, every time I've done it the level of relaxation is ridiculous. Many people report having out-of-body experiences during a session, which did happen to me my first time. I was just floating in space, it was nice.

Homeopathy
The word homeopathy stems from "homios" meaning "same" and this is how homeopathic remedies work: You are given the element that is causing you harm in very small doses, which allows your body to naturally fight the illness and gain an immunity towards it.

Kinesiology
Kinesiology, also called muscle testing or energy testing, is a natural, holistic approach to creating and maintaining optimal health and well-being. A Kinesiologist applies structural, mental, nutritional, and energetic balancing techniques to help people alleviate pain, improve physical and mental performance, and enhance energy. Used all over the world by a variety of different health professionals, it is one of the most advanced forms of holistic health care.

Through the art and science of muscle testing, or energy testing, you can locate energetic and structural imbalances in the body. Furthermore, you can determine which approach will be most suitable to bring the individual back into balance. Muscle testing also gives you immediate feedback so you can confirm your corrections have been effective. See the shop, Touch for Health.

Long distance healing
This is the use of visualization, intention or prayer to send healing energy to a specific person. Many studies have shown the tangible benefits of this. You can do it alone but it becomes even more powerful when done in a group. I have known people involved in long distance healing groups who have witnessed stunning results, such as a man given only a month or two to live because of AIDS who made a miraculous recovery without the help of any medications. This illness went into remission and it's now 10 years later and he's still doing well. I always try to think of people I love or want to help and send them healing energy using imagery and intention. It's really enjoyable and I know it helps.

Magnet therapy
Magnets can be a very useful form of therapy but they must be used with caution. Most importantly, you must know the difference between the north and south sides - as you can imagine, they have opposite effects. Magnets should never be used on someone with a pacemaker or over anything mechanical inside the body. Also, on pregnant women or on people with diabetes they should never be used.

The north side of a magnet, aligned with the North Pole, will draw energy out and is effective for relieving pain. The south side, aligned with the South Pole, disperses energy and increases circulation. Never hold the south side over a tumor! Generally, you shouldn't hold the south side of the magnet over an area for longer than 30 seconds. But the north side could be worn directly over an area for about 12 hours if for instance, it is being used to relieve pain.

Magnets have a wonderful clearing ability, which you can utilize by spinning the magnet along the ends of your meridians (fingers, toes and under the feet, temples, cheeks and over the mouth). But again I caution you - some people have sensitivity to magnets and become weakened by them, so you must energy test, see energy testing, to see if you can handle them in your energy field.

I strongly suggest you do not use magnets unless you have been trained to use them or are being treated by a trained practitioner. And I strongly caution you to do a lot of research before buying any magnet therapy product. The magnets I sell, Titanya's Magnets, are clearly marked to indicate north/south and come with instructions. To learn how to use them see, Energy Medicine.

Polarity therapy
Polarity therapy is a comprehensive health system involving energy-based bodywork, diet, exercise and self-awareness. Health is a reflection of our non-physical bodies and so polarity therapy works on all levels of our energy systems. It assumes health is experienced when our energy flows freely without blockage or constriction. When energy is unbalanced or blocked due to stress or other factors, pain and disease arise. Polarity therapy finds these blockages and releases them. It stabilizes the flow of your energy patterns. It leaves you open and balanced. Applying the polarity therapy system can take diverse forms, and it is something that is used in coordination with other alternative therapies such as cranial sacral therapy and acupressure.

Reiki
I'm a Reiki master and have felt first hand the healing energy that flows through you when you become, essentially, an open channel to the universe. I have also seen its effects and I haven't found a person yet who didn't feel more relaxed after a Reiki session. I use it as a tool when doing any other form of healing. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "lying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words, Rei, which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki, which means life force energy. So Reiki is best described as "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person, including the body, emotions, mind and spirit, creating many beneficial effects, which include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.

Shamanism
I had a hard time finding any explanation of shamanism that I felt really got it... so I'll share my personal view first. My own experience has taught me shamanism is about honoring patchamama, mother earth and father universe. It is about accepting the trees, wind, water and animals as powerful life-force vehicles that can heal us and teach us. I have felt and continue to feel the power of the different shaman I have worked with, each having a distinct energy. One of the gifts shamanism gave me was a deep energetic connection to earth and to other dimensional realities. It showed me a pathway to these connections that I can access whenever I need to. It's powerful.

The explanation feels a bit "cold" but it is a fair one so I've included what the free encyclopedia, Wikipedia, says. They say.. Shamanism refers to a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. Its practitioners claim the ability to diagnose and cure human suffering and, in some societies, the ability to cause suffering. This is believed to be accomplished by traversing the axis mundi (the connection of heaven and earth) and forming a special relationship with, or gaining control over, spirits and nature. Shamans have been credited with the ability to control the weather, divination, the interpretation of dreams, astral projection, and traveling to other worlds. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times.

Therapeutic massage
Touch is healing, and so massage can not only be relaxing but also healing physically and emotionally. It's common for people to break down and cry during a session because our muscles hold onto emotion and massages can release them, which is a very good thing. I get massages all the time, it feels great. It gets your lymphatic system moving, which is why it's very important to drink a lot of water after a massage so that you flush out the toxins and not let them just settle someplace else.

Touch for Health
Touch for Health is a holistic approach to health that teaches the restoring of our natural energies through applied kinesiology, acupressure, touch and massage. It is a practical guide to natural health and can improve postural balance and reduce physical and mental pain and tension. It seeks to stimulate our radiant circuits and make sure our meridian system is functioning properly. See the shop, Touch for Health.
